Digital, Digital Get Down!

The coronavirus pandemic has unquestionably disrupted the way we work and communicate with our clients and each other. Still, the show must go on and as Youth Connekt Zimbabwe (YCZ), we will continue to share opportunities, create initiatives and communicate with you in order to fulfill our three pillars of operation; jobs & entrepreneurship, skills development and network & dialogue. Currently, the best way to do this is to go virtual. We have and you can too! There are several tech tools and services (free & paid) that we recommend you employ during and beyond the pandemic because the future of work has forever been changed.

Successful communication is vital to the growth of any organisation. However, as we’re all confined to our homes and places of sanctuary, communication break-down is bound to occur between you and your team. Never fear, online software such as Slack and Microsoft Teams allow seamless communication between departments, individual team members, and the whole company. While Microsoft Teams combines persistent workplace chat, video meetings, file storage, and application integration, Slack is essentially a chat room for your whole company, designed to replace emails as the primary method of communication and sharing information. Its workspaces allow one to organize communications by channels for group discussions and allows for private messages to share information, files, and more all in one place. Different chat channels in your company allow teams to discuss work, brainstorm ideas, and stay connected throughout the workday. To reiterate, the use of different channels of communication increases productivity so get down, go digital. Don’t let coronavirus or any other pandemic stop you from achieving your targets.

As we seek to stay safe by social distancing, video conferencing plays a bigger role in communicating with clients, partners and other stakeholders. Unlike with emails, video conferencing allows you to see each other’s expressions and react to one another in real-time. This can replicate the benefits of face-to-face meetings you would have had in your office or boardroom. Video conferencing software typically includes screen-sharing capabilities of up to 20 people minimum, recording, and live-streaming, which can add an extra layer of communication and understanding to your meetings. The best options include Google HangoutsStreamyard, and Zoom. These platforms require internet access and are very easy to use because they come with documentation or a getting started guide. These platforms are of great use even after COVID-19 is over; forces you to set agendas, reduces meeting times and thus productivity.

In normal times, project management requires an intense form of communication and progress tracking. While working remotely, keeping your team on track and maintaining everyone’s regular workflows requires top-notch project management tools. If you’re not already using platforms such as BasecampTrelloAsanaAirtable, or Bitrix24, now is the time to set up. These platforms allow you to establish various projects, assign tasks, review updates and project progress in one glance. So whether you’re building a website, writing a blog or revising your company strategy, each member of your team will be able to track your progress and jump into your comments to help you get the job done.

Once you have used the digital tools above to build your product/service you need to find new channels to sell it. After the lockdown has been lifted, life will not go back to “normal” immediately and brick & mortar organisations are going to have to adjust to the new normal very quickly. Going forward, customers will purchase more products online until a vaccine for coronavirus has been determined. Experts warn that it could take up to one year and a half for a successful vaccine to be discovered. To sell your products online, you need to revamp your website if it’s a basic one to an ecommerce site. You can also establish a Facebook page to advertise and sell your products/services. Make sure you partner with the right logistics company in order to successfully deliver your products/services to your end users.

For those with physical products/services, having an online presence is not nearly enough during these times. It’s crucial to find ways to monetize your social platforms and websites in order to sustain and grow your business. Monetizing your website is a good source of revenue if your website receives a lot of traffic. The best way to do this is by displaying online ads. You can do so by creating a Google AdSense account using your Gmail account. Setting up Google AdSense is very easy and free. All you need is a Visa or MasterCard in order to receive your payments.

In synopsis, there are several ways for every business to stay connected to its employees, manage projects and monetize the business’ online platforms. All it takes is a little patience, dedication, and learning. Make Google and YouTube your best friends, make use of the platforms above, stay home, stay connected and save lives and your start-up or business. Digitise now!
